The twins wheeled in on their chains and stood up saying in unison
“I guess that concludes the dramatic chase scene...there could have been more drama though…”They moved their chairs to the opposite side of Kye’s desk and sat with their feet on the desk smiling
“It’s not Saya’s fault, the machine was broken, apparently no one’s taught her how to deal with broken soda machines...and Ms. salem’s not ‘psycho’, she just loves fun, which, by the way, you lack in great quantities.” They looked at the grimoire on the desk and studies it for only a moment before Taylour reached over and grabbed it, flipping it open to a page with only a few additional notes on it.
“Oh, it’s the Obsidian Grimoire, we were wonder what had happened to it...you can actually read this?” They asked looking at Kye before looking back at the grimoire
“I thought no one could read this book anymore, it’s kinda a dead language. Taighler do you remember how to read it...maybe, I’m kinda rusty.” They turned and ‘asked/said’ to each other before flipping to the next page.
So what, I don’t go zipping up and down the hall in a rolly-chair, Kye thought grumpily as her stomach settled itself. I have important work to do, and crap like this gets in the way. She regarded the twins as they flipped through her book, suspicious they were about to *poof!* away with it, and listened intently as the commented over it.
“Yeh, I’ve figured out a bit,” she replied before realizing the potential pair of boons standing before her.
“...You think you could remember it?” Hesitantly, she added,
“...what might it take for you to teach it to me?”
Blair stopped almost to the staircase when she realized she did not have a two certain someones. Blinking she backtracked right into Kyes’ room. Glaring at the twins she grabbed Taighler’s chair and pulled him out of the room right passed Saya.
Taighler glanced at Blair as she re-entered the room and grabbed his chair. He ignored her actions but grabbed Saya around the waist as he rolled past her, hoping to pull her into his lap as they left. Taylour closed the grimoire and waved at Kye as they were pulled from the room by Blair
“Bye Ms. Cheshire, we’ll return Saya...later.” Taylour and Taighler said with a wink and an evil grin, they were hinting at more ‘devious’ actions, even though they had no intent to follow them through.
“So Taighlour, we received a new book, and a cute girl out of this afternoon’s activities, I’d consider this a day well spent.”As Kye watched them wheel away with both her book and the servant she was still somewhat irked with, she called after her with the order,
“Saya, come back with my grimoire or don’t come back at all.” Surely she could trust her for that much.
“Yes, ma’am,” came the familiar’s neutral response as she offered no particular resistance. She would make note to take the book back with her later on, sometime before her masters next classes.
Meanwhile...Kye felt the need for another coffee, and with Saya gone to watch over the Grimoire while she was being “taken”, that meant she would have to get it herself this time. Growling to herself as she holstered White Hare to her belt (just in case, for all she knew, Blair wanted an encore with her sexual harassment) and pulled out another box of Pocky to nibble on, she trudged out of her room toward the teachers lounge.
The twins were dragged from the room before being left to their own schedule for the afternoon. They quickly teleported back to their suite, where they tried to explain to Saya what ‘fun’ was, but only succeeded in telling her that boardgames, pranks, and children were fun since Saya had no emotional attachment to anything besides her ‘master’ and the grimoire. When Saya begun demanding the grimoire back the twins teleported it onto their bookshelf among about 20 other grimoire’s and texts and told her that if she found it hidden in their room she could have it back; they failed to tell Saya that the bookshelf wasn’t technically in their room, but in a different dimension of their room. When Saya was properly distracted the twins teleported to Kye’s classroom and sat in Saya’s usual seat; but since there was only one chair Taylour sat on Taighler’s lap. They waited for Kye to walk back in, since she’d need to be here at least a few minutes before class.
Sure enough, after a few minutes trudging grumpily along, in came Miss Cheshire with her coffee cup, labeled “no $%#’s given until refill #99”, stopping a few steps through her doorway to find the twins sitting where her servant should have been. And no Obsidian Grimiore on her desk yet either.
“...you sonsofbitches,” she growled.
“Where are they?” She should have known they were up to something the moment they took interest in it.
The twins had been reading but paused to look up at Kye when she walked into the room and said some very rude things about their mother before she questioned them as to where Saya and the grimoire were. Totally nonchalantly they said
“That’s not very polite to say about Mekura. And Saya and the grimoireare safe and sound in our room. we managed to read 240 pages of the grimoire and translated about 30 pages before we had to come here to fill in for Saya. We’re still reading the book and translating part of it and Saya refused to return without it, per your request. So we came to fill in for her this period. Oh, we left fresh coffee and some homemade doughnuts on your desk. They finished saying as Taighler then pulled out an old notebook that looked like it’s survived a trip to hell and back with yellowing pages and several mysterious stains on the cover; the cover was labeled with what was probably a title that read
Яках чытаць і пісаць на невя мов домых So that’s what the holdup is, Kye thought as she sipped her coffee. While she momentarily considered having a pair of examples volunteer in the stead of Saya for her demonstration on conjuring electricity for self defense and the effects such spells have on the supposed assaulted, their incredibly swift progress remembering how to read and translate the Grimoire claimed the majority of her attention. It was rather convenient of them to do while they had been seemingly borrowing it. However, Kye was not born yesterday, and she had a feeling this was all too convenient. They translated it, great, but the question was whether or not she was going to be getting either it or her familiar back.
She walked over to her desk and eyed the doughnuts on her desk before picking one up and held it up to her face. After noting it’s fresh scent with, she took a bite out of it. She had to admit, it was pretty good.
“...Not bad,” she commented after swallowing, finishing the rest of it and brushing the crumbs off of her coat before continuing.
“So, any chance that you plan on getting my book and assistant back anytime soon, or is there something else you two would like to share?” she asked in a suspicious tone.
“It’s rather considerate of you two to dive so diligently in that task before we’ve worked out any sort of deal.” It was almost a bit like contracting a very generous spirit via necromancy, and Kye knew quite well how that typically worked out in the end, thus her suspicion. She looked at the notebook they conjured.
“And what’s that, dare I ask?”
The twins paused their reading and Taylour set the book back in his lap while they answered her questions.
“If you must use us for demonstrations today we’d suggest elemental hexes for study...We don’t do well with electricity, and it’s harder to reconstruct us with magic then it is Saya.”Taylour and Taighler grinned as Kye asked for her book and assistant back
“We could go get your book...I guess… after class! We could bring Saya at the same time; It’d be awkward to keep another girl locked up in our room, Mekura got kinda mad last time when she found Clover in there.” The twins smirked pretending to share an evil thought between the two of them before they continued reading.
“We’re actually glad you allowed us to take the book willingly, we were planning on stealing it soon.” Taylour flipped a page in their book.
“I/He would have stolen it sooner, but he got in the way.” They said pointing to one twin, then pointing to each other while reading
“We love history, and we’ve been wanting to read that grimoire for a while, but we could never find it. Fortunately you showed up at the Academy with the book, saving us the time required to search for it.” When questioned about their book they both looked at the cover and replied
”It’s our ‘Яках чытаць і пісаць на невя мов домы’ notebook, but it’s kinda old, we’ve been reading it to refresh our knowledge of the Jabrawoxsi language. It’s not in that language, but we use it like a rosetta stone for languages since we don’t exactly have a language textbook for the Jabrawoxsi language.” They looked at the clock and said
”Class will be starting shortly, you might want to prepare for class…” as they turned to continue reading their notebook.
Kye sipped her coffee once more as she glanced up at the clock. They had a point, she supposed. She originally planned on giving another lecture on offensive spells, but, she supposed today she could find an alternate lesson in the absence of her test dummy, Saya.
Today her class was themed around Mana, the life force energy in all living things. She reviewed with them how living things could take the mana within themselves and convert it to act upon the environment around them through feats of magic.
“The number of spells that exist in the world is infinite, as far as we know, as there are new ones discovered everyday.” Kye explained.
“Some believe that even the most skilled and dedicated sorcerer could live their whole life studying as many as they could, and yet only learn a mere thousandth, if even that much of all the ways to utilize their mana through magic. Scrape the tip of the iceberg, you might say.”
Pointing to the spell circle on the chalkboard with a pointer stick that she had the twins draw for her while she was preparing for her lesson, she continued.
“Naturally, learning spells is not so easy as waving your arms around and shouting, ‘abracadabra’ like a cheap magician ‘performing’ at some poor, unfortunate child’s birthday party. Real spellcasters study the magic they seek to learn by studying their patterns and attributes through spell circles, like this one here.”
(image here:
fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/322/b/7/my_magic_circle_1_by_hoyeechun-d4gj74y.png)“Spell circles, if one were to compare them to another field of interest, are much like binary code for a computer program. Said code tells the program what to do and how to run. Only in this case, the program is a spell to conjure fire in your hand without burning it in the process.” To demonstrate this, Miss Cheshire held up her free hand, and a second later, a ball of flame materialized in her palm without burning it. Some newer students looked in awe, while a few others looked wary, unsure exactly what their devil cat teacher planned to do with the hellfire in her grasp.
“Like so. As you can see, I am now utilizing the mana in my body to fuel the existence of this flame, to ‘run the program,’ so to speak.”
Closing her hand into a fist, the flame extinguished itself into nothing.
“The circle you see behind me is the spell circle, or ‘binary code’ for that spell. Within its design is the instructions in how to utilize mana to perform the feat. However, while there are some spells, typically the most intricate ones, that require the circle to be drawn upon incantation, many low level spells, much like what I just showed you, can be studied and memorized. After all, they serve to instruct you how to direct, divide, build, and utilize mana to perform them. Spellcasters study these circles until they’re capable of visualizing their complex instructions in their mind and follow them through to perform their magical feats.”
She set down the pointer stick beside the twins, who seemed to be flirting with each other during her lesson.
“There are, of course, other means to cast certain spells in particular, as I mentioned there is an indefinite number of them. For example, some advanced spells require a spoken Mantra, key phrases the caster says aloud as they prepare the feat. These Mantra’s, act as ‘passwords,’ to permit use of the ability to, say, defy the laws of time or unleash a nuclear blast upon a target. These spells in particular require Mantra’s to keep them from leveling an entire country on accident and or remind them that the spell they’re trying to cast is going to drain an astronomical amount of their Mana.”
The twins drew the circle as instructed, probably shocking Kye that they knew the circle already and drew it in half the time. After drawing the circle the twins retook their seat and watched as the class filed in and looked at them, picking up many thoughts of
Where’s Saya? Did Kye kill her? Why are the devil twins here!? They just smirked and waited. As Kye started teaching they twins had turned to each other and were whispering back and forth cheesy pickup lines (the cheesiest you can think off) and declaring their love for one another. When Kye summoned fire the twins did too, but they summoned it all over themselves, not just in their hands. At the same moment one of the twins whispered to the other
“You set me ablaze with the burning intensity of 1,000 suns.” Drawing several worried stare before they embraced and the fire just disappeared while the other twin whispered
“Oh Taighlour, I love you more then words can tell.” The twins remained quiet and only semi-distracting as Ms. Cheshire continued her lecture, but when Kye was finishing up mantra’s the twins hatched a plan and put it into action.
The twins stood up and walked over to the board to begin teaching their own lesson
“You’re sitting there thinking ‘why is this important? I know how to cast my own spells it’s easy’ but you are all incorrect. A single change in the ‘code’ of the spell can have very different results, for example: This circle codes for a spell you don’t know yet, but if we change it like so it will produce a different spell. Behold” The twins snapped their fingers and about 20 kittens appeared in the room all sitting there mewing, trying to figureout what had happened, one of the bold ones walked up and was purring as it nuzzled Kye’s left leg. The twins grinned and turned back to the board, erasing one line
”But if we alter just one line in the circle and do it again it will produce very different results.” The twins both snapped again and teleported 45 small colored blobs into the classroom on top of the kittens, they were Clover’s ‘mice’ and the twins would remove them instantly if a single one came near harm, but they felt this was a good example of why precision matters.
“Oh, and if you don’t have good control over a spell, don’t try it, otherwise you might summon something worse than kittens. Any questions?” The twins asked the class and Kye grinning. They felt this was an important lesson to teach, last year several students who had learned this had tried and gotten just a few lines wrong, no one knew where they’d disappeared to too this day.
The mice looked around as they were teleported from their spot next to Clover and to a classroom full of kittens and humans. Seeming to stretch 20 of the blobs started playing with the kittens while five went to explore Kye’s desk, another five rolled over to the twins and ‘climbed’ up to their shoulders. A mint green blob seemed to be controlling the rest of them as they rolled over to a wall and up onto the ceiling to ‘stare’ down at the class. Alawa, the mint green blob, refused to speak to the twins at the moment. She had been quietly enjoying the whole nap time with Apple. The five blobs that had headed for Kye’s desk rolled up and onto the top as they started searching through her papers for anything to give to their god. Before long they had opened the drawers and were searching through them. One of them, a brown blob spotted her coffee and oozed over to it with thoughts of chocolate on his mind. Climbing onto the edge of the coffee cup he peered inside. It didn’t smell like chocolate but it was brown like chocolate. The blob seemed to be debating whether or not to ooze into it.
.
“. . .” Kye silently scowled, her eye twitching in irritation as the twins invoked chaos in her room. Kittens pushing against her leg, mice running through her room like they owned the place, and blobs probing her desk, oh my, this was proving to be a headache. Seeing the blobs probing her desk and the one plotting to invade her coffee cup, she adjusted her glasses with her forefinger, which glinted ominously before she held up the finger, as if she were gauging the wind. Of course, there was no wind. it was a classroom after all. Regardless, a second later, electricity began to spark ominously around Kye’s finger, and the lights in the classroom began to flicker on and off. To the twins, she growled,.
“Get rid of them. Now. Or else I’m going to change the subject of my lecture to one that may shock the two of you.”
The twins re-drew the ‘proper’ circle and teleported all the mice/blobs back to Clover’s room, and all the kittens back to where they’d come from. They sat down quietly, they wanted to taunt Ms. Cheshire again, but they figured she’d actually attack them, and they’d deflect the attack and it might hit someone else. They were here to be assistants, they were just ‘assisting’ in a different way.
A few minutes after class had ended and the classroom had cleared of all but the twins and Kye, Blair waltzed back in with her hands behind her back. Smiling at Kye she had a mischievous glint in her eyes again.
”Hey Kye. Do you have anything going on this weekend, say Saturday at Noon?” Kye opened a window next to her desk, frowning at her coffee before dumping the cups contents out of it as Blair came in, then contemplated an escape plan through that very same window should the events of the earlier day attempt to repeat themselves. .
“I don’t do plans. I do research.” She answered bluntly as she gave the upside-down mug an extra shake to dispel lingering contents out the window. Turning away from the window, meeting Blair’s grinning face, she gave her a suspicious look and hesitantly asked, .
“...Why?”.
Blair watched her as she seemed to contemplate leaping out the window. Maybe she had overdone it earlier. Oh well. ”Well if you have nothing planned how about going out on a date with me.” Normally she wouldn’t show it but Blair looked hopeful that she would say yes.
Kye’s expression changed from suspicious to incredulous at Blairs suggestion. Did she even hear that right? She’s...joking, right? Kye wondered. However, she dismissed this hypothesis looking at her hopeful expression. She’s serious, isn’t she? Ah, hell…
The earlier antics aside, Kye had come to accept that, while unorthodox (or insane) in her opinion, Blair probably was just trying to help somehow. However, she had other things to worry about than a date with her at the moment . “I already have my hands full with the grimiore, Blair. I don’t have time to screw around,” she stated, trying to dodge the suggestion.
It was then that she remembered the books absence, and the servant she summoned from it. She crossed her arms and addressed the twins once more..
“Speaking of which, I believe you were returning it with my assistant.”
Blair watched as Kye simply dodged the question and quickly turned to the twins. She hadn’t wanted to pull this card.
”What If I can get your Grimiore and assistant back will you go on a date with me?”Though Blair probably couldn't see it while the grimalkin's head was turned the other way towards the twins, Kye looked as if she’d been struck in the face, eyes wide and mouth grimacing.
She's holding my book and assistant captive now?! she mentally raged.
Why, Why, WHYWHYWHYWHYWHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?! I don't have time for any of this crap, I have work to do, dammit, is that too much to ask?!As Kye's expression darkened to anger and frustration, she considered threatening the three of them to return Saya and the Grimiore, but quickly abandoned that plan. She already spent more than half of her Mana to maintain Saya daily and provide another fraction of energy for combat purposes. There was no way she could take Blair on her own, let alone with the twins backing her up, at least, not without Saya. And if she planned on researching more of the Grimiore or further her plans with her familiar, she needed them back. Therefore, she had no choice but to comply with Blair's demands.
Still mentally cursing to herself, Kye sighed and returned Blair's gaze with one of bitter defeat.
"...Saturday at Noon? Fine, where at?" she asked. She would seek to pay Blair back for this one day.
Blair watched the back of Kye and sighed silently. She didn’t have to be an empath to know that Kye was angry. It hurt that she couldn’t get a date with Kye without resorting to other measures. Staring at Kye as she lost some of her confidence. When Kye returned her gaze she put up her front appearing confident and absolutely devious as Kye finally agreed to go on a date with her.
”We will start in District 5 then move to District 8 after lunch. Then for Dinner we will move back to District 5.” Smiling she she pulled the book out from behind her back and held it out to Kye.
”Now I am going to give this to you and hope you keep your word.”The twins smiled sweetly.
“If Blair trusts you to keep your word, then we can also return Saya.” They snapped their fingers and Saya appeared between the two twins, holding whatever she’d been last had in the twins room. (I’ll let you decide what she was doing)
Kye blinked, somewhat dumbfounded as Blair simply handed the grimiore back to her.
That was...easy, she thought. she really trusts me to go on this date? she wondered as she took it. She even gave a quick flip through the pages to confirm it was real and held all the contents it left with. Sure enough, everything seemed accounted for.
Meanwhile, Saya popped back into the classroom, sitting in a cardboard box and holding what seemed to be a picture book illustrated with pictures of kittens. She blinked, and upon realizing she was returned to the familiar classroom, she raised her gaze up from what was obviously a childrens book, closed it, stood up from the box, and casually stepped out of it, handing the book to the twin on her left as she did so.
“Keep it, it’s like ...a birthday present” The twins said grinning as Taylour handed the picture book back to Saya while simultaneously Taighler took Saya’s other hand and kissed it softly.
“Thank you,” she said with a polite bow of the head before walking back to her masters side, the picture book clasped in her hands.
After a moment, Kye looked up from her own book and regarded Blair once more.
Well, she thought.
I guess I ought to keep my end of the bargain. “...District 5...It’s a date.”
God, I can’t believe I said that… Blair smiled and turned skipping out of the room.
”Great! See you Saturday!” With that she headed back to her english classroom to teach her next class.
The twins stood back up and made a polite bow to Kye.
“Please tell us if you need help in class again...maybe we can go over elemental spells then...unless we’re too powerful to practice spells with you.” They grinned
“Have a great afternoon” They finished as they clasped eachothers hand and walked out of the classroom.
With the pair left in the room, one holding a grimiore of mysterious, and complex spells, and the other filled with pictures of adorable kittens, Kye looked over Saya’s gift with a raised eyebrow, and said,
“Didn’t I order you to keep an eye on my book?”“No, I was to return with it. It became clear that I ...would not find it by myself.” The familiar answered. Kye rolled her eyes.
Great, someone’s taught her to slack off…“What is a date-?”“Go get me a coffee.”
