[During the Prelims]
A straight-laced couple walked up to the academy smiling. Mr. Claude was dressed in khaki’s and a dark blue polo shirt, his wife beside him was grinning wearing a blue-and-white striped dress with an oversized sun hat with a matching blue bow; she was chattering about being excited to see their daughter River again since they hadn’t seen her since she left for the academy. The husband simply smiled and said ‘yes dear’ as they walked towards the dorms. A few minutes later they walked out grinning with River walking between them wearing a dark pink-floral dress and still carrying Arthur clutched to her chest, but she had a small smile on her face, she was just as excited to see her parents as they were to see her “C-can we stop by th-the gym p-please, I wa-wanna see Mekura fight and say ‘bye’.” River asked as they were crossing campus “No we can’t sweetie.” Her father replied “We need to head out soon so we can make our lunch plans.” “Oh, o-ok.” River and her family walked off campus and got into their car with their chauffeur, and drove into the town towards district 5.
The second the couple had closed the car and the car had begun moving Mrs. Claude took off the large hat and Mr. Claude pulled out a small whistle, and blew it, putting River to sleep and activating her again. River sat up and blinked a few times “De-breif.” Mr. Claude commanded as he listened to River speak of everything that had occurred the last several months Mrs. Claude, who was really just a neuroscientist was typing notes in shorthand for reference later. “We have work to do, let’s go, sweetie.” He said grinning as the car stopped in front of one of the art museums. River did a rapid change into a dark-blue dress and stepped out of the car behind him, leaving her ‘mother’ to follow as the happy little family entered the art museum to enjoy their afternoon together.
[11:50 that evening]
River lead the infiltration into Mekura’s house. River’s job was to lead this squadron of 8 men to capture Mekura and bring her to the pick-up point. After that was accomplished she would go to pick-up the other targets for this operation.
River sent the signal for the squadron to wait outside for the designated time. River walked into the house quietly and used her speed affinity to quickly travel through the house and up the stairs to Mekura’s bedroom. River had a dagger to Mekura’s throat before Mekura could blink, but she paused again, this wasn’t Mekura.
Behind River stood a twenty year old looking woman with blonde hair and pale blue eyes in a tank top and sweatpants. In her hand was a .9mm semi automatic at the back of River’s head. ”River. Who sent you?” Her voice was blank but her body oozed coldness as she waited for River to strike back or answer.
River heard the click and felt the barrel of a gun to the back of her head, she spun around doing a high roundhouse kick to knock the gun from Mekura’s hand, sending it skidding across the floor. Mekura jumped back as her gun was sent racing across the floor. Dropping she swept her leg out and attempted to trip River before jumping at her to pin her to the floor. River jumped over Mekura’s leg sweep and jumped to pin her at the same time, sending them both rolling. The match ended with Mekura on her stomach with River sitting on her back with both of Mekura’s arms in arm-bars.
A strange field swept over the house. It was followed by the dull sensation of faint static charge. It’s presence seemed to toy at the edges of the mind and contaminated the senses as if by plugging them with cotton. Steady footsteps rang out through the otherwise silent house as someone new made their way up the stairs. As if they were familiar with the location, they easily moved from the stairs down the hall and stopped in the doorframe of Mekura’s bedroom.
“Ah, there you are, my little field mouse.” A thin man whose complexion was pale to the point of appearing sickly appeared, his medium length black hair slicked straight back with gel and grease and his face bore a sinister leer. Slung over his left shoulder was the form of a girl, quivering as she silently cried. “To think it would be this hard to find you. This academy certainly is an exciting place.” Claude stepped into the room, circling slowly around Mekura and River, before stopping when he could see the teacher’s face.
“I must say you have some interesting students here, and very loyal to boot. Take this girl for example.” Grabbing the girl from his shoulder, he flung her harshly to the floor. As the girl hit, there was a sickening crack, followed by a shrill scream that was muffled not more than a second after. Claude was kneeling, the student between himself and Mekura with his hand clamped over her mouth to control her sobbing. “To think she would catch us in the act of breaking and entering and come racing to your rescue.” Claude paused before snapping his fingers as if in realization.
“You can’t see her though can you? Certainly not when I’m preventing you from connecting to those annoying little toys of yours. Let’s try this.” Grabbing a fistfull of the girl’s hair, Claude forcefully pulled her head up from the floor. Grabbing her broken arm with the hand that had been covering her mouth he began to pull and twist, worsening the fracture until it strained and splintered into a full break. The girl’s agonized screams pierced the house for a full five seconds until he clamped his hand over her mouth again. “Sound familiar?”
Mekura felt it the moment the field was placed over the house as River pinned her to the ground. Freezing as she heard sobbing, Mekura looked toward the doorway and listened to the man enter her bedroom. Several scenarios raced through her mind as she tried to come up with her best option with getting out of the situation. As the man flung the girl harshly to the floor Mekura didn’t even flinch but met his eyes with her ice cold pale blue ones.
She didn’t flinch when the girl’s arm was broken with a sickening crack that left Gabby screaming in pain. ”Let her go. Shes not part of this!” Her mind slighlty panicked as she tried to figure a way past this guys, which she could only assume it was his, ability to cancel out her affinities.
“But my dear, you made her part of this when you polluted this place of learning with your unnatural presence.” Standing, Claude dragged Gabby up by the back of her shirt and moved to the bed, sitting down and placing the sobbing girl in his lap as he watched Mekura, his leer never fading. “River.” His voice was commanding. “Let’s get her into something a bit more fitting, shall we?”
River nodded once and got off of Mekura while pulling one her pistols from it’s holster and pointing it at Mekura. “Please take off all your clothing and weapons, leave them in a pile here.” She finished pointing at a spot a few feet from Mekura.
Mekura stood up as River got up and pointed a pistol at her. Brushing off her night clothes she propped her hands on her hips and looked in the direction of River. ”Do I get something to change into?” River reached behind her and one of the other soldiers handed her a folded light-blue jumpsuit and a sports bra, which she handed to Mekura without so much as blinking.
Mekura sighed inwardly and began stripping pulling off her weapons as she went. She had managed to gather 20 daggers on her person but not much else. Dropping everything into a pile she pulled on the sports bra and light blue jumpsuit. The jumpsuit looked a little loose on her. Lately she had lost a bit of weight.
Claude openly grinned as he watched her change. When she was finished, he motioned to one of the soldiers. “Restrain her.” The guards approached cautiously, before roughly grabbing both of her arms and forcing them behind her back. One pulled out a long thick leather strap, covered in various runes that glowed ominously in the dark. Pulling her arms together and her shoulders back, they wrapped the binding around them, from the wrists straight up to the shoulders. When the ends were fastened, the mystical binding further constricted, pulling taught to the point of numbing her limbs. A second strap was brought forth and applied to her legs in an identical manner. Finally, a harness was applied to her head, sealing her jaw closed and muting any sound that could escape through her locked mouth.
Sneering, Claude rose to his feet, throwing the student to one of the guards and approaching Mekura. With a hand to the back of her head, he stepped a leg in front of her and slammed her head into the floor hard enough to splinter the paneling.
Mekura clenched her teeth as her head made contact with the floor. It set all her senses reeling making her almost sick to her stomach. Closing her eyes she wanted to speak out but unfortunately the head binding refused to allow any noise to escape.
“Don’t worry, my little field mouse.” He whispered directly into her ear mere inches from her head. “As soon as we finish rounding up the rest of your kind, we’ll be out of this little school faster than you can say Pantech. No one will be the wiser, and you’ll live the rest of your short existence writhing in agony in the depths of our labs until we finish analyzing your composition. No one will ever know where you disappeared to and you’ll be remembered as the teacher so pathetic, that she ran away from all of her duties without a word to anyone; too scared to face the students that loved and respected her, and too arrogant to tell her co-workers of the demons that always haunted her.” Using her skull as a point of leverage, he stood back to his feet, motioning to one of the guards. “Get this filth out of here. There is more work to be done before we leave this godforsaken place.” Turning, Claude walked out of the room and made his way to their point of extraction.
River followed him silently out of the house and continued towards the academy to pick-up her other targets.
