"A dinner date sounds fun." Kye answered. For a moment after being handed the doll that Blair had won, she became very aware of the change in her relationship with Blair.
"Thanks. I think she'd really like this, actually," she had said, looking down at it.
Before, she could have easily said she wanted nothing to do with her. Now, she rather looked forward to it. Perhaps it was due to the fact that there were so few she could really get along with rather than simply tolerate, or that she hardly ever tried to socialize with any of them if she didn't have to for her own gain, but she had to wonder...
Was this what friendship felt like? It didn't quite feel like the sense of trust in her faithful assistant, Saya, nor did it feel like the desire to search for a means to save Aylia as her sister.
Kye was still looking down at the stuffed animal, lost in this train of thought, when she felt Blair move a strand of hair out of her face again. She blinked, and as she looked up, she felt the soft touch of Blair's lips on hers. Kye simple stood there, transfixed on that moment.
No, she concluded. This is different.
As Blair pulled away, Kye was still rendered speechless, her cheeks now flashing a very visible red contrasting with the pink of her hair. As she left, the grimalkin finally snapped out of her stupified state at the sound of the door opening behind her. Spinning around in aprehension, she saw Saya standing in the doorway. "Master, Welcome back," she said in her cordial, yet somewhat awkwardly robotic tone.
"S-Saya! You think you're a ghost or something, creaking the door open like that!?" Kye sputtered. She knew full well the door didn't actually creak, but she hoped her outburst would give Saya something else to focus on rather than the fact that the grimalkin was now hastily straightening her pose in an effort to compose herself instead of slouching against the wall like some swooning schoolgirl.
Damn it, Blair, she thought, flustered. Doing things like that outta nowhere, jumbling my thoughts and speech, the hell do you think you are, you...you...
She wasn't even paying attention as Saya spoke. "To be fair, one from your position could say that I am a ghost in essence. Or perhaps that was a rhetorical question? Hm...or was that sarcasm? Is this a test? In any case, I have made sure to repel all threats from the grimiore and took the liberty of alphabetizing your notes and records. It is now safely sitting on your work desk in your private room in the back of the lab." When Kye didn't answer, as she was lost to her flustered thoughts, she asked. "How was your date?"
"Hm?" Kye blinked as she finally realized Saya had been talking to her. "Oh, it...it was fun." She glanced down at the stuffed cat she was holding, and handed it to Saya. "We got a souvenir for you from District 5's fairground. I'm ordering you as your master to take care of it for me, all right?"
The familiar's gray eyes seemed to glow as she took the stuffed animal into her arms. "Yes, ma'am, I shall, thank you."
"Good. I think I'll be turning in a little early tonight. Make sure to lock up before you go to rest."
"You won't be translating the Grimiore, Master?" Saya asked, watching Kye retire to her personal room.
"Not tonight. Fun can really take it out of you."
Saya stared after her master silently for a moment before looking down at her gift with a small smile. She then turned and returned inside of the room, closing the door behind her and locking it.
"Master, are you all right? Your face appears to possess a strange color."
"Saya, shut up!"
~~~
The hallway eventually fell silent, and from the shadows of its dark corners, a figure with vermilion eyes stepped into the moonlight, as if it had been watching and listening the whole time.
