Birds flew over head as machines worked in the fields between the city and the dark wall. It was obvious they were machines as they were spouting water and fertilizer from their finger tips. A young girl about 10 stared into the field for a moment before flipping open a blue and pink sketchbook. Quickly drawing an outline she added a few details before closing it and placing it back in her side back. Pulling her black hair back into a braid she tied it off with a light blue ribbon her black eyes circled in red stared down the road toward the dark wall. Her curiosity apparently gotten the best of her as she headed toward the wall once again in her short sleeved shirt, jeans and all-terrain skates. She had borrowed them from her sister that morning.
Briar moved quickly toward the wall. She just wanted to peak over it. Staring at the wall she knew it wouldn't be that easy. As she got closer she ended up having to tilt her head back. Climbing it was out of the question. As she approached the base of the wall she looked up and down it attempting to find a way in. Spotting a guard like person entering a doorway she followed after him quickly and hid in the shadows. Once inside she clicked her heels together silently turning the all-terrain skates back into her combat boots. Sneaking around the corridor she avoided the guards pretty easily to the point it made her wonder about their mental capabilities. Finding an elevator she pressed a button and quickly walked in as if she had every right to be there. Noting no one was in it she let the door shut and hit the roof button. Pressing herself against the wall it crossed her mind to pry the panel off to rewire the elevator to not stop until it reached its destination but thought they might notice something odd if she did. Looking at the numbers slowly climbing higher she started to relax. Almost to the top.
Once it hit the top she let out a breath of relief as the doors opened. Though it was cut short as two guards walked in looked at her then attempted to catch her. Ducking she let out a burst of fire blinding the poor guards and hit the first floor button. Watching the door shut she felt bad for blinding them but they were gonna stop her. Quickly the small 5'0'' girl moved to the edge of the wall to see what was out there on the other side of the wall.

The bitter and broken landscape that greeted her was something that could only be the product of nightmares; too horrendously unbelievable to be reality. The earth was pale, as if it had been drained of all life bringing nutrients it should have contained. The trees were barren and of an unnatural gray color as if they had been turned to stone.
To the immediate right, approaching the wall and extending as far as one could see were the ruins of a massive civilization which clearly dwarfed any that modern day society had managed to accomplish. It's great structures of an unknown material achieved feats of construction that steel could never hope to match.
To the left, a forest of the petrified trees extended far into the distance. However, unlike the others, something seemed to line their branches. Only upon close inspection would one notice that many of the shapes were still moving.
Finally, directly ahead, a mountain range filled the remainder of the visible horizon; its peaks glowing a brilliant orange with the unnatural fire that covered it's slopes. A strange black fog seeped forth from it's valleys towards the wall, but dissipated upon reaching a series of small towers with glowing orbs set into their tops.
Every now and then, the normally invisible barrier that the dark wall projected would pulse, flicker, and shudder back into silence as some unseen threat connected with it and was obliterated.
"It's an overwhelming sight, isn't it?" The headmaster's words were toned with respect as he made his presence known beside the girl. "Now don't be startled, you're not in trouble. Curiosity is a trait that I admire in my students. However, I should warn you; curiosity can often lead to far more threatening pursuits. Do not take the Dark Wall lightly. The Decayed Expanse will not hesitate to claim the life of an overzealous student. It never has, and it never will."

Black red rimmed eyes stared at the vast sight before her. Crawling up onto the wall she sat there staring at the expanse as she felt the life gone from it. It was a very broken landscape as if someone had decided it was no longer needed. Saddened at the sights before her she couldn't even bring herself to draw the poor landscape. Taking a deep breath she looked over to the ancient broken civilization and looked at the amazing structures. It made her want to know more about this place that had been here way before her time. Looking to her left she saw the forest and examined them. Dark shapes seemed to move signifying that the there was still life out there despite the conditions.
Looking at the petrified trees she rested her hands in her lap. As master Eleazar spoke she hardly even jumped but rested her gaze on the black fog that was only kept at bay by the orbs protecting the wall. Considering her words carefully she pulled out her notebook and a pencil and flipped to a new page. Slowly she wrote down her thoughts. I was curious as to why everyone thought there was such a big bad monster beyond these walls. I just wanted to look but now that I have.... Her words seemed to trail off as if she had trailed off when speaking as she gathered her thoughts. I feel sad. As if this land is missing something vital. Something vital that has taken the warmth from everything. Its not overwhelming, just sad and broken. Looking to the headmaster she tilted the book so he could read her words.

Eleazar smiled and nodded sadly.
"I understand completely. This dimension was already in such a state when the first gate to it was opened. No one is sure what happened here, though what is certain is that this corruption is unnatural. It wasn't a spontaneous event, rather it was caused by something." The Master paused as a sly smile creased his face. "Well, there is one particularly ancient lineage that claims to know the cause of such disaster. Their numbers have," And uncertain pause. "Dwindled sharply due to unavoidable circumstances, but I know of at least one who still protects us from the things we can't see. He might even be in this city."

Briar looked at him and didn't miss the sly smile. Deciding to play along for now she looked back out at the landscape. Looking at her book she started writing again. If there was a person who knew she wanted to know this person. Though she had a feeling she was playing right into Eleazars hand. Well for now she would play. Not like she had much to do anyways. Where can I find him? I would like to speak with him about it. I'm very curious. Briar tilted her book for the headmaster to see as she watched him. He was a very interesting person which she wouldn't mind having more interactions with.

"Hmmmmm." The master eyed her suspiciously for a moment before he turned around, sat down, and lit a pipe. "Nope can't tell ya."

Briar arched a brow as he acted like a child who had no incentive so he didn't have to tell her. Crawling off the wall she looked at him and smiled politely before writing her notebook and showing him. Well then I guess I don't need to know. I was just curious. As it is I should probably be going. It was nice chatting with you Headmaster Eleazar. Waving she headed off. If he wouldn't tell her she would not push it. Plus Alex would probably be wondering where she had gotten off to about now.

Eleazar nodded in satisfaction.
"Good I'm glad you understand. Erebus is already angry enough at me. I'm sure it would annoy him even more if I told you he comes from a lineage of guardians who have served to protect our people for many generations. If he found out I told you something like that he would be furious. Erebus can get kind of scary when he's mad." The Master stood up and began walking with her, wagging his finger. "So no matter what, I can't tell you about Erebus's dark and frightening secrets."

Briar blinked as she turned to watch him. Erebus was who he was talking about? Curious she walked beside him as he wagged his finger about not being able to tell when he has done just that. Chuckling silently she nodded her head. Maybe she would ask a few questions that weren't directly related to what she had learned. Or maybe she should wait to see if Erebus would bring it up himself. She should invite Erebus to lunch this week but she would have to find him first. Maybe Bridgit could find him.
