Stars twinkled in the night sky from the courtyard while the crescent moon seemed to be getting ever smaller. Shadows danced around the plants and gave of comforting feelings to those used to the dark and to those who weren't it was a place to be avoided. One student who seemed to blend into the night, walked with a purpose toward the middle of the courtyard where it was clear except for the grass and some stones. Stopping the dark clad student turned in a circle and seemed to nod happy with the spot she had picked.
If one looked closer her hair threw off a dark purple glint from the moon due to its blackness and all that could be seen of her eyes was a red ring encompassing the black iris. A little music play lit up in her hands as she flipped through songs and finally settled on a rather upbeat playlist. Placing the ear-buds in her ears, the girl hit play and put the player in her pocket. Placing her her right hand out in front she gave her wrist a flick and a ring of bright fire jumped to life in the air encircling her with about a foot of distance from her body. The fire showered the girl in light showing off a pair of loose jeans and a violet shirt that only seemed to look dark since it was night. A smile lit her lips as she looked over her handy work. She had decided to practice at night cause it was more clear when she made mistakes than during the day.
As the music started to play she dropped her hand and decided tonight she would attempt to practice with out the physical movement tonight. Briar willed the fire up above her head as Stamp on the ground got louder. When the music vibrated her fire pulsated in an outward motion before being reigned in again. A bit comfortable with the motion Briar sent it away from her breaking it from its circle it to a six foot stream. As a base for the movement she used the beat of the music and sent her music through coordinated twists and spirals around her.

A boy in a pure black outfit began to wonder around the campus a little after 9 at night, walking around the peaceful night. such a nice night considering how busy it was during the day thought Mockingbird to himself. This school is a lot larger than I thought. It’s so nice here, I’ll have to thank Mekura for allowing me to come here one day As Mockingbird walked around the courtyard, he noticed a light moving around a ways away from him.
Curious, he began to head toward the light who could that be? Not many people are out this late at night Getting closer to the light, he noticed the light was being generated by fire surrounding the girl. Mockingbird stopped 25 feet away from the figure within the dancing flames, not wanting to interrupt, barely noticing the figure's hands were not being used to control the fire. Wait, is the fire pulsating and spiraling? Will they be ok? Are they losing control of the fire…? As he thought about this, Mockingbird moved closer to the fire, attempting to get noticed to ensure the figure was not being harmed.

River had been sitting in a tree in the courtyard holding her teddy bear Arthur when she watched a small girl walk past her under the tree and walk into the courtyard to start practicing her fire control. When Briar first started the fire River let out a small gasp and curled up tighter in the tree, but when it became apparent the girl wasn’t going to hurt her, River thought That’s cool, I wish I could do that…maybe I can get a closer look if I’m careful… River quietly climbed out of the tree and begun creeping closer to get a better look. It would have been nearly impossible to see River against the night, she was bare-foot still and was wearing a midnight blue dress that fell to her knees, if someone was looking for something they might see Arthur with the dark green bow around his neck but they wouldn’t see who was holding it Oh, I should probably put my darkness us so that I don’t scare anyone and with that thought It became impossible to see her against the night.
Alice was walking through the courtyard; she was trying to find an empty place to practice her blade work. Mint Bunny was sitting on her head dozing “I’ll find you a soft bed of moss when we find a good spot; I told you that you didn’t have to come.” Alice’s only reply was a muffled snore from Mint Bunny. She was dressed unusually for her normal attire, she was still wearing a dress, but this dress was a midnight black color, and slightly shorter, falling only to her knees; also she wasn’t any petticoats, just a dress and shorts. She paused when she saw pulsing light coming from the courtyard ahead. Who else would be out here at this hour? Alice entered the clearing to the left of Briar and saw a girl standing in the center of a ring of fire that was pulsing to a continuous beat. I don’t think the girls’ been trapped, she looks too calm, she must be controlling it. Maybe she can teach me how to control my fire Alice looked around and saw someone else approaching the girl I can’t tell who that is, but I think it’s a boy She reached into her bag and pulled out one of her short petticoats putting it under her dress. As she got closer she made sure she was making some noise and was slowing angling towards the girl’s front so Alice didn’t startle the girl. She sat down in the grass about 20 feet from the ring of fire and silently observed the beautiful patterns and rhythm the fire had.

Briar watched the fire and gently moved it away from her to the beat of the music. She needed to know the maximum distance her fire would go before she could surpass it. As it got about 15 ft away it started to flicker dangerously. Narrowing her eyes at the fire it went another five feet before bursting to life as if it had a will of its own. Unhappy with it misbehaving she threw her arm out infront of her and yanked it back all rhythym from the music lost in her little experiment. Noticing a figure in her periphereal vision she blinked and turned toward it and waved slightly as she realized it was Mockingbird. Before long she spotted Alice who had sat and been watching her. It would probably do them good to know what they would be able to do in the future.
Briar turned around feeling as if someone was staring at her. Noticing a black blob that wasn't natural she reached her hand out gently. As she went to touch it she realized she probably shouldn't cause it was probably a student or someone just wanting to hide cause it didn't feel harmful, so she pulled back at the last moment and turned back to her fire. Gently she motioned it toward Mockingbird and Alice. It split into two three ft streams and spiraled lazily around the two older students. It was warm to the touch no hotter no cooler. It had taken her weeks to perfect it so that when she was playing with little kids it didn't burn them when they touched it. Of course Alex and Bridgit had been her tester since she couldn't exactly test it on herself since she didn't burn in fire. Briar looked up as a wave of dizziness passed over her. It was hard to keep it so far from her body while maintaining its form and heat. Letting herself fall downwards she sat. Though to those watching it would seem as if she had collapsed. Reigning in the fire she pulled it back toward and it again formed a ring around the girl once again illuminating her features.
Checking her watch she realized she had been working on this for the past twenty minutes. Alvion would probably be starting his rounds in another forty minutes. It would be a bad idea to be caught outside when he did start. For now though she could work with these two which would help push her stamina to its limits tonight. Holding her hand out she beckoned the siblings forward. She would work with them tonight on how to extinguish fire since they both seemed to have trouble once its been started.

As Mockingbird noticed another figure walk into the courtyard, he stayed where he was, entranced by the beautiful patterns that burned into the air. As the fire began to move toward him, he felt himself tense up, watching it flicker 10 feet away from him, than head back to the woman. Seeing the figure wave, he waved back who is that? She knows me I think. When the fire began to split into two, heading for both him and the other figure, now sitting down, he realized it was Briar. Smiling he watched as the flames spiraled around his body, not feeling the heat, just as if it were a warm breeze.
So it’s been Briar the whole time. That’s amazing how skilled she actually is controlling fire. Seeing her begin to fall to a sitting position Mockingbird began to worry once more, then noticed the fire begin to travel back to Briar. He began was to walk toward the other figure on a ground that had walked into the courtyard and sat down. Getting closer, he noticed a couple things, the first, the figure was Alice, and the second was she wasn’t in her bright cloths but rather a darker dress. Wonder what she’s doing out and about this time of night. I thought she trained to be a ‘proper lady’ by that vile aunt. Then Mockingbird smirked at a thought maybe we are more closely related than I thought before, especially seeing her now
Deep in thought, Mockingbird barely noticed when Briar motioned to the two of them. Smiling, he looked at Alice, saying “perhaps we should head toward her eh Alice?” holding out his hand to help her up off the ground. “Never realized Briar could control fire that well to spiral it around us so far away.”

River froze as Briar walked towards her bubble of darkness and reached out to touch it. Don’t touch me, please don’t touch me she thought loudly. It must have worked because the girl pulled back her hand at the last minute and turned back towards the fire. River sat in her bubble, transfixed by the girl’s control of fire. She got worried when the girl fell and moved closer as if to catch her before pausing and thinking. I might scare her if I suddenly appear and grab her from nowhere River sat down again approximately 5 feet from Briar.
Alice watched the fire expand out into a larger ring before it collapsed back in on itself. When the girl controlling the fire did this Alice guessed it was Briar. Alice sat perfectly calm as the fire twined around her. She was smiling and reached out to feel the fire, it felt no hotter than a warm summer day however, Mint Bunny was woken up and found he was surrounded by fire and panicked Oh my gosh! What happened? Did you start another fire, don’t burn me! Alice said very quietly so that no one could hear her “Calm down, Briar’s controlling it, you’ll be just fine. Relax.” about the same time that Mint Bunny was calming down Briar fell into a sitting position, Alice was going to get up to react, but when she noticed that Briar had fallen into a sitting position she calmed down to just watch the night. When Briar’s fire twined around her and the other student she recognized him as Mockingbird. What’s Mockingbird doing out this late?...probably the same thing I am, getting out for some private practice Alice looked over at Briar and saw her motioning them over. When Mockingbird offered Alice his hands she took them and stood up carefully he has some manners…maybe it’s possible we’re related “yes, let’s go join her. I would very much like to ask her how she controls the fire that efficiently.” She hooked her arm through his and started walking towards Briar. “I’m not surprised she can. She’s a talented young lady.” Alice stopped in front of Briar and sat down saying and signing “Hello, sorry we interrupted your practice.”

From a corner of the courtyard, there echoed out a slow beat.
Click... Clack... Click... Clack...
The sound a slow and steady step, made with dignity and poise and the finest dress shoes, made by the finest tailor. Each step calculated and made with purpose. Each step, bringing him closer.
Passing under a tree, the light from the moon which filtered through its branches illuminated his form as he drew near. Clothed in a suit of exquisite material, tailored to perfectly suit him; it's stripes accentuating his commanding presence and air of superiority. A flash of white, as the moons glow reached his torso, where an arm draped in crisp white cloth rested, supporting the elbow of the other, which stretched to a hand also clothed in white, resting on a chin contemplatively. A flash of the golden sun at night, as his hair, and piercingly confident eyes were reflected for an instant, before falling into darkness again.
"My, my, my; we're out awfully late aren't we?" His voice like the smoothest satin flowed over the courtyard, enveloping all who it reached in a shivering embrace. "If Alvion were to catch such young students out and about at this hour, I'm sure he would make quite a scene." This satin bore a weight, a strength, which should have been impossible for a material of such beauty and class.
"Luckily, I am not Alvion, and am far more forgiving than he, especially to those whom I can call friend." Stepping into the light of the courtyard, the young gentleman gazed out at those assembled with his captivating eyes, and alluring smile.
"My name is Pierce Veil. You are my friends, aren't you?"

Briar felt the person behind her tense as she fell. Chuckling silently she stayed still as the bubble behind her moved and sat down away from her. Looking over her shoulder she noted the bubble was now 5 feet from her. Slowly she wrote in the air with the fire since she hadn't brought her notebook and pencil with her. 'Its okay you can move closer.' Patting the spot next to her she turned her attention to the older students heading her way. Noting that Mockingbird had been talking to her she decided to keep quiet that she was gonna fall into bed exhausted tonight. Plus she had only been able to do so with physical motion to help strengthen her control and will over the fire.
As they sat she smiled and waved before writing in the air. 'Hello! Its alright. I love company. Plus I should work on a few smaller things for now. How about we have our first lesson?' She clapped her hands together happily. Suddenly her gaze snapped up to meet that of the boy who had joined them. Taking in his appearance she immediately recognized him as the Student council President. Smiling she rearranged the letters in the air and added a bit more to it. 'Hello President Pierce. I'm Briar. As for Alvion, he does not start his rounds until lights out which means we still have time before we are actually supposed to be inside.' Lights out wasn't till ten. She had read the rules and she wasn't gonna disobey them on purpose....maybe.

In his head, Mockingbird rolled his eyes as Alice looped her arm through his, allowing her to do so. Why did that vile woman have to teach her how to be a ‘proper’ young lady When they stopped in front of Briar, he nodded toward her without talking, just watching Alice’s hands create the signs to communicate with Briar. As Mockingbird heard footsteps behind them he released Alice’s arm, to glance behind him. Seeing a figure with white cloths approaching, he looked back and whispered, pulling lightly on her arm, “Alice, there is someone coming, we have to go. Now.”
Hearing the man’s voice, Mockingbird stopped pulling on Alice’s arm then walked toward Briar, Lightly pricking his fingers with his rings, hardening the blood right as it came out to stop the bleeding from being noticed. Sitting down a little ways away from Briar, he held one of his playing cards watching the man, not responding at first to the man. so his name is Pierce? And he’s the student body president? Mabye it would be better if Horo was President. I have a bad feeling about this guy. He seems like he would almost be.. cold? Corrupted? Almost evil? “Hello Pierce, my name is Mockingbird, how are you tonight?” said Mockingbird, ignoring his instincts to run. He’s nicely dressed up. Perhaps he’s like Alice. Glancing over to Briar, he saw her writing more words in the air, noticing a dark shape to her side that seemed to never have light touch there. Wonder why no light can reach that spot.

River noticed the note Briar had written to her and silently crawled up so that she was sitting beside Briar, still carefully watching Briar and the two other students out of the corner of her eyes. She saw Veil approaching before Briar did, and inched back a little as he walked towards the group. I-I-I don’t trust him…he looks…scary
Alice was glad that she and Mockingbird hadn’t interrupted Briar’s practice and signed to her “Could you please help me learn how to ‘put out’ the fire? I’d hate to hurt some-” Just then Mockingbird turned around, Alice also turned to see what had caught his attention. She saw a very well-dressed boy walking towards them through the moonlight. He was wearing a black, pinstriped suit vest and pants, with a dress shirt and white gloves and looking disapprovingly at them. As he should be. I shouldn’t be out this late, what would Aunt Priscilla think? ...I’ve been acting most un-lady like recently Alice thought as she clasped her hands in front of her skirt oh no, I forgot! I’m wearing a dress that’s absolutely way too short for a proper lady. Relax Alice; you’re still wearing petticoats, and the proper stockings and shoes. A lady must always hold herself with composure, poise and grace, even in imperfect situations. Alice thought as she carefully set Mint Bunny on the ground beside Briar, smiled and, ignoring Mockingbird, walked over to Pierce. “Good Evening Mr. Veil”She said bowing politely and gracefully to him “I’ve heard much about you. Sorry, we’re out late, I came out here to practice a little extra for my classes…I was not expecting to run into company” She replied politely remembering her short dress. I don’t believe we’ve met before, I’m Miss Alice Kiraland it’s a pleasure to meet you. Alice went to offer her hand before pausing and begun bring her hand back to her skirt. River notice that Mockingbird had moved and sat down next to Briar and had pulled out a throwing card. She was whispering to Arthur quietly enough that almost no one would hear her “That’s a cool thing he has…hey Arthur, you think we could look at it? We could just borrow it for a minute then give it back.” River moved silently from Briar’s side to crouch beside Mockingbird and watched him playing with the card, when his hands weren’t touching it for a brief second she used her speed affinity to quickly grab it and bring it back towards her as she fell into a sitting position. “This is a cool card, and it’s sharp too.”River observed quietly as she sat looking at it forgetting completely that she had to give it back. She set Arthur on her lap so that she could use both hands to examine the card and slowly made a small cut along her right finger examining the sharpness. “I wonder if he’s good with the cards” she murmured quietly.

Smiling to Briar as Alice approached, Pierce nodded slowly.
"Ah, you looked through the student handbook quite thoroughly I see." He said with a coy smile. Catching Alice's hand before she could retract it, he placed his left arm behind his back and bowed slightly, bringing the back of her hand gently to his lips. "The pleasure is all mine Miss Kiraland."
"Now Piercey, you shouldn't be having fun with troublemakers." From the opposite side of the courtyard, a girl with bright pink hair, wearing a blue school uniform skipped into sight. She crossed the court yard with her happy gait, an axe swinging wildly in her right hand as she went. When she reached the group of students, she twirled around so that she ended up in front of them, staring eye to eye with Briar. Pierce regarded the girl warily, standing straighter than he had before. The girl smiled cheerfully as she leaned in close to Briar. "You've been a bad girl!" she sing-songed, before twirling her way back over to hang off of Pierce's arm. Falling into sync with her, a devious smile appeared on Pierce's face.
"Briar dear, as you're familiar with the school rules, surely you didn't forget about the restrictions on the usage of dangerous abilities in public areas?" The rule Pierce brought into question was intended to prevent/place a penalty on student's fighting in thoroughfares and areas where many students had a tendency to gather. The penalties were severe enough to discourage most fights. It was clear that the rule was being twisted by Pierce and the unsettling girl to fit their own agenda. Maintaining his sly smile, Pierce continued.
"Your flashy pyrotechnic display earlier was a blatant violation to that regulation. Do you not care about the safety of your fellow students?"

Briar stood as Alice and Mockingbird did. Hearing the girl from the bubble speak she kept her eyes on Pierce. Yeah she had heard stories from Bridgit and Alex. Bridgit seemed to delight is challenging him though she had no idea why. Hearing Desdemona the head disciplinary girl she felt a shiver run down her spine. Meeting the girl's eyes with her own red ringed black ones she waited and gave her a friendly smile. The moment he spoke about the rule her mind simply recalled the real reason the rule was in place and she gave a shrug as if she actually had forgotten. Might as well be a bit naughty tonight.
Knowing River was scared of the man, Mockingbird seemed skittish and Alice, well Alice looked absolutely infatuated by the boy. As he maintained his sly smile she let her eyes go wide as if she had forgotten it was a violation and that the students beside her might have been in danger. Writing in the air once again she gave a smirk. She might have been hanging with her sister for a bit too long. Sorry, Seems I forgot. This is my first year here and all. Plus I felt like showing off a bit. The way she worded it made Briar appear as if she had willingly put their lives in danger by showing off.
Before she continued to write she let the previous writing turn into tendrils of fire that were no hotter then a summer days breeze gently wrap around Pierce and his companion. After a few moments it disappeared in a blatant show that she was disobeying the rules on purpose as she started to write again.. Also these guys should be getting to bed. Briar knew that all students who disobeyed the rules were supposed to be take straight to Alvion for punishment. Though she didn't really care for the fact that Veil seemed to be trying to play with her.

Feeling his card disappear from his hand, Mockingbird looked down to see if he dropped it. So strange. Now where did my card go I wonder? Creating a small flame in the palm of his hand, enough to see yet small enough he knew confidently he could control it without losing control, he looked for his knife. Noticing the blob of darkness that was previously by Briar, he looked at it and said in a low voice “ Hello there. May I have my card back? Or at least have you seen it?”
Hearing a new voice, Mockingbird glanced up to see a woman in blue coming into view. What now? Who is that and why is she here now? as he glanced back to the bubble, he held out his hand, careful not to touch it. “May I have my card? We need to go soon so we won’t get in trouble. Hearing Pierce talk again, Mockingbird thought I wonder why he seems so strange and wanting to get Briar in trouble? This is the first time I’d actually like to see that Bridget girl here, if not just to protect her little sister.
Noticing Briar writing again, he read her message, realizing she wanted to take the blame for everything. Whispering quietly for only Briar to hear, knowing the bubble of darkness could also hear him, he said “Briar, don’t do this. If we hurry and leave none of us have to get into trouble. Who is that girl hanging on Pierce anyways?”

Alice blushed a bright pink color when Pierce kissed her hand “You have wonderful manners Mr. Veil.” She replied as he released her hand and she brought both her hands to rest in front of her skirt. Just then Desdemona twirled by, purposefully shoving Alice out of the way so that she was hanging off of Pierce’s arm. Alice quickly regained her balance and turning towards Desdemona dropped into a shallow curtsy. ”Good evening Miss Desdemona, what are you doing out so late?” Alice asked politely as Mint Bunny took up residence on her head again and settled in I don’t like this girl, she looks like trouble . Alice watched as Pierce accused Briar of purposefully endangering the students, she was going to speak up in Briar’s defense but stopped when Briar finished writing her own message, and sent the fire twining past her and around Pierce and Desdemona. She’s going to get in trouble for that, let’s see if I can fix this she thought as an idea occurred to her. She looked at her watch it read 9:40 “Oh, I completely lost track of time look how late it’s gotten.” She said before she walked over to Mockingbird and sliding her arm into his said “Mr. Mockingbird, will you please accompany Miss Briar and I back to the dorms, I’m horrible with directions and would appreciate the escort.” While doing this sending him thoughts of don’t be an idiot, pretend to be a gentleman, offer Briar your other arm, and walk out of here calmly
River heard Mockingbird start talking to her but had been startled by the sudden question directed at her. She dropped the knife which fell past Arthur accidently slitting open his chest seam. River didn’t notice at the time and picked up the card and silently handed it back before responding almost silently “H-hello” When Mockingbird whispered that they had to hurry and leave or risk getting in trouble she picked up Arthur and started creeping away, still shrouded in darkness and said quietly “I-I’ll leave… s-sorry I-I got in the way” As she was creeping past Pierce opposite of Desdemona she was being especially quiet, until she noticed the tear down Arthurs chest as a small piece off stuffing fell and landed on her foot. “ARTHUR!!!!!!” River screamed as her darkness dropped and she collapsed crying clutching Arthur to her chest….right next to Pierce’s feet. She was still barefoot and was crying as if the world had ended, which it had in her eyes. Arthur was everything to her, and he was now torn down his entire chest.

Pierce made no movement as the tendrils of flame wrapped around him. As they dispersed, his slight smirk could have frozen water solid.
"Now that's going to cost you." He said in a cold and threatening tone. Suddenly the girl who had been attempting to sneak away under the cover of darkness collapsed near his feet. Eyes snapping down to her, he regarded the sobbing girl as one might an insect who had gotten to close to the dinner table. "You're in the way." Pierce stated coldly as he slowly raised a finger to point at her. Suddenly and to his surprise, Desdemona stepped between them, giving him the grin he always found unsettling. He lowered his arm and said nothing more.
Desdemona knelt down in front of the sobbing girl, and with one finger, gently pulled her chin up so that they would meet eye to eye. The frightening girl's eyes glinted in an unnatural way.
"He was quite precious to you, wasn't he?" Her voice was a quiet sing song. In the courtyard around them, all movement ceased. Leaves froze, hanging motionless against gravity, and the air became heavy and almost stagnant. "The destruction of something so precious, it's almost like the world is laughing at you." In River's mind, a dull chorus of laughing voices began to slowly grow louder. "But don't worry! If you want," Pierce grew slightly pale as though he knew a horrible event was about to follow. "I can make everything better." It was as if her voice came from all around them; from inside them. It consumed them and could nearly shatter their minds. "You want that, don't you?"
A bolt of lightning struck the ground between River and Desdemona and the courtyard returned to normal. Alvion leveled his revolver with the top of Desdemona's head as he held the sobbing girl with his free arm. His eyes were emotionless as they met two pools of crazed fire, leering expectantly at him, daring him to pull the trigger. He turned his torso so that his body was fully between Desdemona and River, and pulled the hammer back. He addressed Pierce without moving his eyes.
"If you want the student council to still be a functional student organization by tomorrow morning, get her out of my sight." Pierce gave a quick diplomatic smile before reaching a hand out towards Desdemona. He evaporated into a fine mist of blood.
"You think that I am a mad dog, and that he is my keeper? The last I checked, you meatsicles weren't even fit for afternoon tea."
"Oka~y!" A cheery voice rang out from the edge of the courtyard as the mist that was once Pierce Veil condensed and re-solidified into a living being. He straightened his tie and walked away immediately as though it wasn't the first time such a thing had happened. A small, beautiful redheaded girl rushed from the shadows of the courtyard, her arms spread to the side like an airplane, and jumped onto Desdemona with a big hug. "She's just a wittle gwumpy today, so pay no attention to her." Katarina, (for all intents and purposes the school lunch lady) gave Alvion a salute. "I'll make sure you get a big extra serving tomorrow to make up for it, okay? Okay!" Spinning Desdemona to her feet, she pulled her into a dancing pose. "Keep up the good work everyone!" With a bout of laughter, Katarina danced the two of them out of sight.
Alvion didn't move for a solid minute after they left, his cocked revolver still pointed in the direction the two had left. Finally, with a heavy sigh he released the hammer with his thumb into a resting position and replaced the weapon in its holster. He lowered himself slowly into a knights kneel and sat River on his leg.
"Show me." He all but ordered the sobbing girl in his usual tone before pausing and adding in a much softer voice, "Please." Waiting with one arm on her shoulder, when she showed the bear to him, he raised his free hand and it began to glow softly. Running a finger over the seem, the fabric was forced back together, the severed molecular bonds forced to reconnect, literally making the bear good as new. Raising his eyes to the rest of the group, he addressed them. "Is everyone alright?"
